About me

I fell in love with photography in the summer of 1999 in New York. Returning to London, I started working in the film industry, initially as a camera assistant, with my focus on becoming a cinematographer. I learned a lot about visual storytelling from the cinematographers I worked with and gained valuable technical expertise being an assistant. As I began to travel more, I came across many powerful human stories from diverse cultures and I realised I wanted my images to be more than a beautiful composition - they needed to tell a meaningful story.

“I see photography and filmmaking as my way to inform and inspire. As a tool to make a difference.”

The turning point

A pivotal moment happened in 2006 during a solo trip to Jerusalem. I’d been asked to photograph protestors at the wall being built to separate Israel and Palestine, and had imagined dramatic clashes with police and people chaining themselves to the wall. In reality, two ladies old enough to be my grandmothers picked me up at the Jaffa gate, they were the ‘protestors’, a group of Israeli mothers and grandmothers who visited the check-points daily to observe that no human rights abuses were taking place. These women completely challenged my ideas of how to speak out against injustice and make a difference. I was deeply humbled by their immense bravery and the dignity with which they carried themselves, never engaging in anger or aggression, without interfering and using their presence and observation alone to have a positive impact on a tense and dangerous situation; they inspired my first short documentary film ‘Mother Courage’ - acquired by Al Jazeera for their ‘Witness’ strand.

These human experiences shaped my focus on telling inspiring stories; working in documentaries and with NGO’s highlighting human rights and environmental issues.

What has recently emerged is a desire to explore a more artistic vision; to merge my documentary experience with my love of nature, and to share my photography as art work that can hang in people’s homes that will inspire and remind them of the universal essence that surrounds us and will hopefully allow a moment to dissolve into this vast and beautiful universe of ours.
