Every film starts as a story. Of course some stories have been told many times before, which makes them less interesting. The way I like to find interest is by telling the story in a different way.
If you’re talking about the Israel Palestine conflict, we’ve all heard about the deprivation. So I decided to see the West Bank through Israeli eyes. I sought out a group of mothers sympathetic to the Palestinian cause who were self-appointed monitors of the situation.
In ‘Mother Courage’ the conflict between the West Bank and Israel is played out in a personal way in the mother’s hearts. They are mothers of Israeli soldiers but also humans who understand the plight of people trying to get through these endless checkpoints. Their inner conflict helps us see the situation through fresh eyes.
Whatever the story or topic there’s always a new way to understand it.
